On defaults

Every setting you add is a question you’re asking your user. Most people never answer; they live with whatever you chose for them. Which means the defaults are the product — the settings page is just an apology.

When we audited our own app, fewer than 4% of users had changed any setting at all. The other 96% were using the product we actually designed, not the configurable one we imagined.

So design the default like it’s the only state that exists. Because for almost everyone, it is.
