What I learned from paper notebooks

A notebook never asks you to choose a template. It never syncs, never updates, never moves your pen. Its only feature is being there — and that turns out to be the feature that matters.

Software notebooks keep trying to be databases. But the value of a note is rarely retrieval; it’s the act of writing it down. The thinking happens in the hand.

I still type most of my notes. But the design bar I hold them to is the paper one: open instantly, accept anything, never interrupt.
